US Navy method — measurements in inches

How to use the Army Body Fat Calculator

  1. Enter your inputs into the Army Body Fat Calculator above.
  2. Results update instantly as you type — no submit button needed.
  3. Adjust any value to see how the result changes in real time.

The Army body fat formula

Men: BF% = 86.010·log10(abdomen − neck) − 70.041·log10(height) + 36.76 · · · Women: BF% = 163.205·log10(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684·log10(height) − 78.387

Same equations as the US Navy method. Measurements taken in specific anatomical locations defined by Army doctrine; all values in inches.

Worked example

A male soldier with 71" height, 36" abdomen and 16" neck: BF% = 86.010·log10(20) − 70.041·log10(71) + 36.76 ≈ 20.7% — within the Army standard for most age groups.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Army body fat standards?

Vary by age and sex. Men ages 17–20: 20% max; 21–27: 22%; 28–39: 24%; 40+: 26%. Women: 30%, 32%, 34%, 36% for the same age brackets. Standards are tightening under AR 600-9 updates.

How are measurements taken?

Specific anatomical sites: men measure neck just below the larynx and abdomen at the navel level. Women measure neck below the larynx, natural waist and hip at the widest point of the buttocks.

Is the tape test accurate?

Roughly ±3–4% compared to DEXA. The Army has acknowledged limitations and is updating standards. Service members can request a DEXA scan in some cases.
