The tip formula
Tip = Bill × (Tip % / 100) · · · Total = Bill + Tip · · · Per person = Total / People
The calculator tips on the amount you enter. Enter the subtotal before tax to tip on the pre-tax amount, or the full bill to tip on the total with tax. The Total Bill it shows is that amount plus the tip.
Worked example
On a $84.50 dinner bill at 18% tip split between 3 people: tip = 84.50 × 0.18 = $15.21; total = $99.71; per person = $99.71 / 3 = $33.24 after rounding. Each share is rounded to the cent, so three shares of $33.24 come to $99.72, a cent more than the total. For a 20% tip the per-person share rises to $33.80.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip in the United States?
The Emily Post Institute's tipping guide suggests 15 to 20% of the pre-tax bill for sit-down wait service and 10% of the pre-tax bill at a buffet. The 15, 18 and 20% buttons fall in that range, and you can type any other percentage.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
The Emily Post Institute's guide works from the pre-tax bill. To follow it, enter the bill before tax. The calculator tips on whatever amount you enter, so its Total Bill then leaves the tax out. Add the tax from your receipt to get what you pay.
How do I split a bill unevenly?
This calculator splits the total into equal shares only. For an uneven split, run it once per person, with that person's items as the bill and 1 as the number of people. Each person then tips the same percentage on their own items.
