The tip formula

Tip = Bill × (Tip % / 100) · · · Total = Bill + Tip · · · Per person = Total / People

Some calculators tip on the pre-tax subtotal, others on the after-tax total. The math is identical — just choose which bill amount to use as the base.

Worked example

On a $84.50 dinner bill at 18% tip split between 3 people: tip = 84.50 × 0.18 = $15.21; total = $99.71; per person = $99.71 / 3 ≈ $33.24. For a 20% tip the per-person share rises to about $33.80.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip in the United States?

15–20% is the standard restaurant tip in the US. 18% is a common default for good service; 20–25% is generous and 10% indicates dissatisfaction.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is technically correct, but most people simply tip on the final bill. The difference is small for a typical meal.

How do I split a bill unevenly?

Most tip calculators split the total equally. For an uneven split, divide the bill into individual subtotals first, then apply tax and tip proportionally to each.
