  3. Adjust any value to see how the result changes in real time.

The sales tax formulas

Tax-inclusive: Total = Price × (1 + r) · · · Tax-exclusive: Price = Total / (1 + r)

r is the combined sales tax rate as a decimal. To find tax alone from a post-tax total: Tax = Total − Total/(1 + r).

Worked example

A $129.99 item at 8.25% sales tax: total = 129.99 × 1.0825 = $140.71; tax alone = $10.72. Going the other direction, a $50.00 receipt at the same rate had a pre-tax price of 50.00 / 1.0825 ≈ $46.19.

Frequently asked questions

What states have no sales tax?

Oregon, New Hampshire, Montana, Delaware and Alaska have no state-level sales tax (Alaska allows local taxes). All other states charge between 2.9% and 7.25% at the state level, with local taxes on top.

Are services taxed?

Most states tax tangible goods but not services. Exceptions vary widely by state — some tax labor on car repair, dry cleaning, or pet grooming.

What about online purchases?

Since Wayfair v. South Dakota (2018), online retailers must collect sales tax based on the buyer's state, even without a physical presence there.
