The percent-off formulas

Savings = Original × (% off / 100) · · · Sale price = Original − Savings = Original × (1 − % off / 100)

Multiply original price by the discount fraction to get dollar savings, or multiply by one minus the discount fraction to get the sale price directly.

Worked example

A $79.99 item at 35% off: savings = 79.99 × 0.35 = $28.00; sale price = 79.99 × 0.65 = $51.99. To check work: $28.00 + $51.99 = $79.99 (original price).

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the original price from the sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount). A $40 sale price at 20% off had an original of $40 / 0.80 = $50.

Do percentages combine when stacked?

No — stacked discounts multiply. 30% off then an additional 20% off equals 0.70 × 0.80 = 0.56, or 44% combined off, not 50%.

Does tax apply to the original or sale price?

Sales tax is calculated on the sale (discounted) price, not the original.
