The GPA formula
GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) / Σ credits
Each grade converts to grade points (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0 on the standard 4.0 scale). Multiply by credit hours, sum, divide by total credit hours.
Worked example
4 courses: A (3 credits), B+ (3), C (4), A− (3). Points: 12 + 9.9 + 8 + 11.1 = 41. Credits: 13. GPA = 41 / 13 ≈ 3.15.
Frequently asked questions
What is a weighted GPA?
Some high schools weight AP, honors and IB courses on a 5.0 scale to reflect their increased difficulty. An A in an AP class might be 5.0 points instead of 4.0.
How is + and − handled?
Common scale: A+ = 4.0 or 4.3; A = 4.0; A− = 3.7; B+ = 3.3; B = 3.0; B− = 2.7. Some schools use a strict 4.0 scale where +/− doesn't affect points. Check your institution's policy.
How do I improve my GPA?
Math is unforgiving for high-credit students: a 3.0 student with 90 credits needs 30+ credits of 4.0 to reach 3.5 cumulative. Lower-credit students have more flexibility.
