The weighted grade formula
Final grade = Σ (score × weight) / Σ weights · · · Needed score = (target − Σ earned weighted) / final weight
Each assignment's contribution is its percentage score times its weight. Sum these, then divide by the total weight to get the course grade. The "needed score" formula isolates the final exam.
Worked example
Course breakdown: homework 30% (avg 92), midterm 30% (85), final 40% (?). To earn a 90 overall: needed final = (90 − 0.3×92 − 0.3×85) / 0.4 = (90 − 27.6 − 25.5)/0.4 = 92.25.
Frequently asked questions
What if I have multiple categories?
List each category as a row with its own weighted contribution. Some calculators support unlimited categories; aim for the sum of weights to equal 100%.
How are letter grades assigned?
Common scale: A 90+, B 80–89, C 70–79, D 60–69, F <60. Some schools use 93+ for an A, or +/− subdivisions. Check your syllabus.
Can the needed score exceed 100?
Yes — if you're too far behind, no final exam score can rescue your target. The calculator will flag this and suggest a more realistic target.
