How to use the Grade Calculator
- Pick a mode. Weighted grade works out a course grade from your assignments. Final exam score tells you what you need on the final to reach a target.
- In Weighted grade, enter each assignment's score, the points possible and its weight, then press Calculate Grade. You get the course grade as a percentage, rounded down to two decimal places, and a letter grade.
- In Final exam score, enter your current grade, the weight of the final and your target course grade, all in percent, then press Calculate Final Exam Score.
- Read the score you need on the final. Below it are the course grades you would finish with at 100% and at 0% on the final. To try other numbers, change any value and press the button again.
The weighted grade formula
Course grade = Σ (score ÷ total × weight) ÷ Σ weights × 100
Each row counts its score as a share of the points possible, times its weight. The calculator adds the rows up and divides by the total weight you entered. The weights do not have to add to 100, so you can enter only the work graded so far and see where you stand. The grade shows rounded down to two decimal places, and the letter comes from the unrounded grade. Every letter cutoff is a whole percent, so the two always agree.
Worked example
Three rows, which are the calculator's default inputs: 85 out of 100 at a weight of 25, 90 out of 100 at 25 and 78 out of 100 at 50. Grade = (0.85 × 25 + 0.90 × 25 + 0.78 × 50) ÷ 100 × 100 = 82.75. The calculator shows 82.75% and a B-.
The final exam formula: what you need on your final
Required score = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w. Here w is the weight of the final as a fraction, so a final worth 25% has w = 0.25. Current is your grade on everything except the final, and target is the course grade you want. All three go into the calculator as percentages.
The formula treats the rest of the course as settled. Your current grade counts for 1 − w of the course grade and the final for w. If other work is still ungraded, the answer holds only when that work comes in at your current grade.
Worked example: 88% now, final worth 25%, target 90%
These are the numbers the Final exam score mode opens with. Your current grade carries 75% of the course, so it contributes 88 × 0.75 = 66 points. You need 90 − 66 = 24 more, and the final can supply at most 25. Required score = 24 ÷ 0.25 = 96.
The calculator shows 96.00% as the score needed on the final, 91.00% as the course grade with 100% on the final and 66.00% as the course grade with 0%.
Targets out of reach and targets already secured
If the formula gives more than 100, the calculator says the target is out of reach without extra credit. It also shows the highest grade you can still reach, which is the course grade with 100% on the final.
If the formula gives 0 or less, your target is already secured and the score needed shows as 0.00%. A current grade of 95 with a final worth 20% leaves you at 76.00% even with a zero on the final, so a target of 70 is safe.
How the result is rounded
The calculator rounds the score needed up to two decimal places and never down. With a current grade of 85, a final worth 35% and a target of 90, the exact answer is a little over 99.2857 and the calculator shows 99.29%. A score of 99.28 would leave you at 89.998%, which is under the target.
The two course grades are rounded down to two decimal places, so neither is overstated. If you type a target with more than two decimals, all three figures use as many places as the target has.
Frequently asked questions
What if I have more than three assignments?
Press + Add Assignment for each extra row, and × to remove one. A row counts once it has a score of 0 or more, a total above 0 and a weight above 0. Empty rows are ignored. A row that is only partly filled in, or has a value outside those limits, is left out, and the result says how many rows were left out.
How are letter grades assigned?
The calculator uses a plus and minus scale: A+ from 97, A from 93, A- from 90, B+ from 87, B from 83, B- from 80, C+ from 77, C from 73, C- from 70, D+ from 67, D from 63, D- from 60 and F below 60. Schools set their own cutoffs, so check your syllabus.
What do I need on my final to get an A?
Switch to Final exam score and set the target to the lowest percentage that counts as an A in your course. On this calculator's scale an A starts at 93 and an A- at 90. Schools set their own cutoffs, so take the number from your syllabus. With a current grade of 92 and a final worth 20%, a target of 93 needs 97.00% on the final and a target of 90 needs 82.00%.
What if I need more than 100% on the final?
Then the final alone cannot get you to the target. The calculator says the target is out of reach without extra credit and shows the highest course grade still reachable. With a current grade of 80, a final worth 20% and a target of 90, the score needed is 130.00% and a perfect final gets you to 84.00%.
What do I enter as my current grade?
Your grade on everything except the final, as a percentage. If you do not know it, use Weighted grade first. Enter the work graded so far with its weights and leave the final out. The result is your current grade. Homework at 92 and a midterm at 85, each weighted 30, give 88.50%.
