Body Type Calculator
Identify your body type based on measurements — ectomorph (lean, hard to gain), mesomorph (muscular, balanced) or endomorph (rounder, easier to gain).

The somatotype assessment
Body type scored on three axes: ectomorphy (linearity), mesomorphy (musculoskeletal robustness), endomorphy (fatness)
The Heath–Carter somatotype method scores each of the three components from 1 to 7 based on skinfold thicknesses, bone widths and muscle girths. Most people are blends, not pure types.
Worked example
A 5'10", 145 lb, 7" wrist-circumference adult is often classified ectomorph-dominant. The same height at 200 lb with 8" wrists and visible musculature would score mesomorph-dominant. Pure types are rare.
Frequently asked questions
Is body type genetic?
Bone structure and natural body shape are largely genetic. Body composition (fat and muscle ratios) is highly modifiable through nutrition and training.
Should I train differently based on body type?
Training principles work universally. Body type can inform realistic expectations — ectomorphs may need to eat more to gain weight, endomorphs may benefit from leaner nutrition strategies — but the fundamentals don't change.
How accurate is this classification?
The Heath–Carter method is well-validated for the components it measures. Simplified body type assessments (e.g., based on wrist size alone) are much less precise.
