The fat intake formula
Fat grams = (Total calories × fat %) / 9 kcal per gram
Dietary guidelines suggest 20–35% of total calories from fat. Low-carb approaches can go to 60–75%. Minimum for hormone health: about 0.3 g/lb of body weight.
Worked example
A 2,200 cal/day intake at 30% fat: 660 cal ÷ 9 cal/g = 73 g fat/day. At 25%: 61 g. On a low-carb 60% fat plan: 147 g.
Frequently asked questions
Saturated vs. unsaturated fat?
Most guidelines cap saturated fat at <10% of calories. Unsaturated fats (especially omega-3 and monounsaturated) are linked to lower cardiovascular risk. Trans fats should be near zero.
Is dietary fat fattening?
Fat is calorie-dense (9 vs. 4 cal/g for protein and carbs) but doesn't cause weight gain on its own. Total calorie balance determines weight; fat's role is to provide essential nutrients and satiety.
What's the minimum healthy fat intake?
Below about 20% of calories or 0.3 g/lb body weight, hormone production and fat-soluble vitamin absorption can suffer. Endurance athletes may need higher minimums.
