Food Points Calculator

Enter a food's calories, saturated fat, sugar, protein and fiber, then press Preview Points. The calculator scores the food with the formula below and can add it to a daily log that totals points and calories. The score is this site's own. It is not an official value from any diet program. We could not trace the formula to a published source, and we have not checked its results against any program's values.

This is this site's own score, from the formula on this page. It is not the Weight Watchers (WW) Points value. We could not trace the formula to any WW source, and we have not checked it against WW's values.

How the calculator scores a food

Points = Calories / 50 + Saturated fat (g) / 4 + Sugar (g) / 4 − Protein (g) / 10 − min(Fiber g, 4) / 7

Calories, saturated fat and sugar add points. Protein takes them away, and so does fiber up to 4 g. The result is rounded to one decimal place and never goes below 0. Calories are required and a blank gram field counts as 0. Total fat does not change the points. It is only compared with saturated fat, which cannot be larger.

Worked example

A serving with 250 calories, 3 g saturated fat, 8 g sugar, 10 g protein and 3 g fiber: 250/50 + 3/4 + 8/4 − 10/10 − 3/7 = 5 + 0.75 + 2 − 1 − 0.43 = 6.32, shown as 6.3 points. With 6 g fiber the credit stops at 4 g, or 4/7 = 0.57, and the food shows 6.2 points.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an official points value?

No. The formula is this site's own, and we could not trace it to a published source. It adds points for calories, saturated fat and total sugar, and it takes them off for protein and fiber. We have not checked its results against any diet program's values, and they can differ a lot. Fruit gets points here from its calories and sugar, even though a program may count fruit as free. Treat the number as this site's own score, and use your program's app for its value.

Are points a good way to lose weight?

This page cannot tell you that. It only turns label figures into a number. In this formula calories, saturated fat and sugar raise the number, and protein and fiber lower it.

How many points should I eat per day?

The calculator does not set a daily target. The daily log here adds up the points and calories of the foods you enter, so you can compare them with your own target. It stays on this page only and clears when you reload.

Does it treat any foods as zero points?

No. This calculator has no list of zero-point foods and scores every food from the numbers you enter. A food with 200 calories and 5 g protein shows 3.5 points, whatever the food is.

Why do I get a warning about the units?

Protein and sugar hold about 4 calories per gram and fat about 9. When the grams you entered hold clearly more than the calories you entered, one of the numbers is probably wrong. 100 calories with 300 g protein shows 0 points and the warning. It cannot catch kilojoules typed as calories, so check that the label figure is in kcal.
