The excess weight calculation
BMI = Weight (kg) / Height (m)² · · · Excess = current weight − (24.9 × height_m²)
BMI above 25 is overweight; above 30 is obese per WHO. Excess weight is the difference between current weight and the highest weight that would put you within the healthy range.
Worked example
A 5'10" (1.78 m) adult weighing 200 lb (90.7 kg): BMI = 90.7 / 1.78² = 28.6 — overweight. Upper healthy threshold = 24.9 × 1.78² = 78.9 kg. Excess: 11.8 kg (26 lb) to reach BMI 24.9.
Frequently asked questions
Is BMI the right measure?
It's a screening tool. Muscular individuals can have high BMI without elevated health risk. Waist circumference (men >40", women >35") and body fat percentage capture risk more directly for borderline cases.
Is being overweight always unhealthy?
Mildly overweight (BMI 25–27) doesn't consistently increase mortality in some populations, especially in older adults. Obesity (BMI 30+) is associated with significantly higher cardiometabolic risk.
What's a safe rate of weight loss?
0.5–2 lb per week for most adults, accomplished by a daily calorie deficit of 250–1000 kcal. Slower loss preserves more lean mass and is more sustainable.
