How the score is made
Score = |hash(name 1 + name 2)| mod 101
The calculator joins the two names, drops spaces and capital letters, and runs the letters through a simple 32-bit hash. The remainder after dividing by 101 is the score, so it can be anything from 0 to 100. A score of 90 or more reads "Top marks from the letters." and a score under 20 reads "The letters disagree. Ignore them."
Worked example
Romeo and Juliet score 88%, with the line "The letters get along." Capitals and spaces make no difference, so romeo and JULIET also give 88%. Type Juliet first and the score drops to 79%, because the hash reads the letters in order.
Frequently asked questions
Can this score predict a relationship?
No. It has no predictive value. The score comes from the letters of two names, and nothing about a relationship is in them. Treat it as a game.
Why do the same names always give the same score?
The hash has no random part. The same letters in the same order always produce the same number, which makes the calculator look as if it knows something. It doesn't.
Does the order of the names matter?
Yes. The calculator reads name 1 and then name 2, so swapping them usually changes the score. Romeo and Juliet give 88%, Juliet and Romeo give 79%.
