The time zone conversion
Target time = Source time + (Target offset − Source offset)
Each time zone has a UTC offset (e.g., EST = UTC−5, IST = UTC+5:30). The conversion is straightforward arithmetic, but DST shifts the effective offset by an hour seasonally.
Worked example
3:00 PM Eastern (EST, UTC−5) to GMT (UTC): 3:00 PM + 5 = 8:00 PM GMT. To India (IST, UTC+5:30): 3:00 PM EST + 10:30 = 1:30 AM next day in India.
