The currency conversion
Target amount = Source amount × exchange rate
Exchange rates are quoted as the number of target-currency units per one source-currency unit. Banks and apps typically add a 1–3% spread over the mid-market rate.
Worked example
At an exchange rate of 1 USD = 0.93 EUR, $1,000 USD converts to about €930. A 2% bank spread would deliver closer to €911 in practice.
Frequently asked questions
What is the mid-market rate?
The midpoint between the buy and sell rates currency traders quote each other. Most consumer services charge a small spread above this rate.
Why does my bank give a worse rate than this calculator?
Banks and card networks add a spread (typically 1–3%) plus sometimes a flat fee. The calculator shows the mid-market rate; your actual conversion will be slightly less favorable.
How often do exchange rates change?
Continuously during market hours. Major currency pairs can move 0.5–1% in a single day; emerging market currencies move more.
