The unit conversion principle
Target value = Source value × conversion factor
Each unit pair has a fixed conversion factor (e.g., 1 mile = 1.609 km). For non-linear conversions (Celsius to Fahrenheit), the formula adds an offset: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32.
Worked example
100 km/h to mph: 100 × 0.6214 ≈ 62.14 mph. 70 kg to pounds: 70 × 2.2046 ≈ 154.32 lb. 25°C to °F: 25 × 9/5 + 32 = 77°F. 1 gallon to liters: 1 × 3.7854 ≈ 3.79 L.
Frequently asked questions
Are US and UK gallons different?
Yes. US gallon ≈ 3.785 L; UK (imperial) gallon ≈ 4.546 L. Important for international recipes and fuel economy comparisons (UK MPG looks higher than US MPG for the same fuel use).
What about precision?
Default to enough significant figures for your application. Engineering: 4–6. Cooking: 2–3. Everyday: 1–2. The calculator carries more internally and rounds for display.
Why do temperature units have offsets?
Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points. Kelvin is an absolute scale (zero = absolute zero) and converts to Celsius by simple offset: K = °C + 273.15.
