The shoe size conversions
US men ≈ UK men + 0.5 · · · EU ≈ US men + 33 · · · Japan (cm) = foot length in cm
Each region uses different baseline measurements. EU and Japanese sizes are based on actual foot length (in Paris points or centimeters); US and UK use historical foot-length-based but somewhat arbitrary scales.
Worked example
US men's 10 = UK men's 9.5 = EU 43 = Japan 28 cm. US women's 8 = UK women's 5.5 = EU 38–39 = Japan 24 cm.
Frequently asked questions
Why do US men's and women's sizes differ?
Historical: women's shoes are sized 1.5 larger than men's for the same foot length. So a US women's 8 is equivalent to a US men's 6.5.
How do I measure my foot?
Stand on paper, trace foot, measure length (heel to longest toe) and width. Compare to a brand-specific size chart. Best measured in the afternoon when feet are slightly larger.
Why does shoe size vary by brand?
Different lasts (the form shoes are built on), different markets, and "vanity sizing." Always check the specific brand's size guide, especially for athletic shoes where fit matters most.
