About this shift

The shift starts late in the evening and runs past midnight, so it ends in the small hours on the next calendar day. 2 hours fall before midnight and 2 hours after it.

4 hours is 4 hours short of 8 hours. Five of these shifts come to 20 hours a week, or 17 hours 30 minutes with a 30-minute unpaid break each day.

If you take a 30-minute unpaid break, 3 hours 30 minutes remain, which a timesheet in decimal hours shows as 3.5. The 30 minutes is an example, not a legal rule. Whether you get a break, and whether it is paid, depends on your employer and where you work.

How the hours are worked out

  1. Write both times in 24-hour form: 22:00 and 02:00.
  2. The end time is earlier on the clock than the start, so add 24 hours to it. 02:00 becomes 26:00.
  3. Subtract. 26:00 − 22:00 = 4:00, which is 4 hours.
  4. For minutes, 4 × 60 = 240. For decimal hours, 240 ÷ 60 = 4.
  5. With the break, 240 − 30 = 210 minutes, or 3 hours 30 minutes.
