How to use the Mileage Calculator

- Type your fuel economy in MPG, based on the US gallon, or in L/100 km. Then type the price you pay per US gallon or per liter.
- Type an average speed for the whole drive. If you plan stops, add the break time in whole minutes.

The calculator keeps every figure as an exact fraction and rounds once at the end. It uses the exact definitions 1 mile = 1.609344 km and 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L. Those two numbers convert MPG and L/100 km both ways, since each one is 235.215 divided by the other. The fuel cost per 100 miles or km is the trip cost divided by the distance, times 100. Money is rounded to the cent, fuel to six significant figures and driving time to the nearest minute.
Worked example
The fields start with these numbers, so you can check each result. A 600-mile trip at 30 MPG burns 600 ÷ 30 = 20 US gallons, which is 75.7082 L, and 30 MPG is 7.84049 L/100 km. At 3.50 per gallon the fuel costs 70.00, or 11.67 per 100 miles. At an average of 60 mph the drive takes 10 h 0 min, and 45 minutes of breaks make it 10 h 45 min. Type 0.76 as the rate per mile and the reimbursement is 600 × 0.76 = 456.00. After the fuel, 386.00 is left.
Frequently asked questions
What is the IRS standard mileage rate for 2026?
For business use, the IRS lists 76 cents a mile from July 1 to December 31, 2026, set in news release IR-2026-29. From January 1 to June 30, 2026 the rate was 72.5 cents. For the second half of 2026 the same page lists 14 cents a mile for charity and 23.5 cents for medical use and for moving by members of the military. What does "reimbursement minus fuel cost" mean?
It is the rate times the distance, less what the fuel for this trip costs at your price. Say you are paid 456.00 for a 600-mile trip and the fuel costs 70.00. The calculator shows 386.00. It knows nothing about insurance, tires or repairs, so it does not split that amount further.
Why does the driving time differ from my map app?
The calculator divides the distance by the average speed you type, then adds your breaks. A map app uses its own road speeds and traffic data. To match a trip you have already driven, divide the distance by the hours it took and use that as the average speed.
How do I convert MPG to L/100 km?
Divide 235.215 by the MPG. The exact factor is 100 × 3.785411784 ÷ 1.609344, from the definitions of the US gallon and the mile. 30 MPG is 7.84049 L/100 km, and the same division turns L/100 km back into MPG. The calculator shows the other unit next to the fuel used.
Are tolls and parking in the trip cost?
No. The trip cost here is fuel only. Add tolls, parking and any other charges yourself.
