The time card math
Daily hours = Out − In − Breaks · · · Weekly = Σ daily · · · Pay = Regular × rate + Overtime × (rate × 1.5)
In the US, hours over 40/week (or 8/day in some states) are typically overtime at 1.5× the regular rate. Some employers use bi-weekly thresholds; check local labor law.
Worked example
Mon–Fri 9–5:30 with 30-min lunch each day = 8 hr/day × 5 = 40 hr regular. Saturday 5 hours = overtime at 1.5×. At $20/hr regular: $800 + 5 × $30 = $950 weekly gross.
Frequently asked questions
What is "double time"?
Some union contracts or state laws require 2× pay for hours over a threshold (often 12/day or hours on the 7th consecutive day). California has the most worker-protective rules.
Do salaried employees track time?
Often yes for project allocation, even when not for pay. Federally exempt employees (salaried + specific job duties) aren't entitled to overtime under FLSA.
How are paid breaks handled?
Short breaks (under 20 min) are typically paid. Meal breaks (30+ min) where employees are fully relieved are typically unpaid. Include only paid breaks in worked hours.
