About this shift

The shift starts in the small hours and ends in the afternoon on the same date. It doesn't cross midnight, so the hours are a plain subtraction. From 2am to noon is 10 hours, and from noon to 2pm is 2 hours.

Three 12-hour shifts make 36 hours a week and four make 48 hours. With a 30-minute unpaid break on each, three come to 34 hours 30 minutes.

If you take a 30-minute unpaid break, 11 hours 30 minutes remain, which a timesheet in decimal hours shows as 11.5. The 30 minutes is an example, not a legal rule. Break and overtime rules depend on your contract and where you work. This page gives clock time only.

How the hours are worked out

  1. Write both times in 24-hour form: 02:00 and 14:00.
  2. Subtract. 14:00 − 02:00 = 12:00, which is 12 hours.
  3. For minutes, 12 × 60 = 720. For decimal hours, 720 ÷ 60 = 12.
  4. With the break, 720 − 30 = 690 minutes, or 11 hours 30 minutes.
