About this shift
The shift starts in the afternoon and runs past midnight, so it ends in the small hours on the next calendar day. 8 hours fall before midnight and 2 hours after it.
10 hours is 2 hours more than an 8-hour day. Four of these shifts come to 40 hours a week, and five come to 50 hours.
If you take a 30-minute unpaid break, 9 hours 30 minutes remain, which a timesheet in decimal hours shows as 9.5. The 30 minutes is an example, not a legal rule. Break and overtime rules depend on your contract and where you work. This page gives clock time only.
How the hours are worked out
- Write both times in 24-hour form: 16:00 and 02:00.
- The end time is earlier on the clock than the start, so add 24 hours to it. 02:00 becomes 26:00.
- Subtract. 26:00 − 16:00 = 10:00, which is 10 hours.
- For minutes, 10 × 60 = 600. For decimal hours, 600 ÷ 60 = 10.
- With the break, 600 − 30 = 570 minutes, or 9 hours 30 minutes.
