About this shift
The shift starts in the evening and runs past midnight, so it ends in the small hours on the next calendar day. 7 hours fall before midnight and 1 hour after it.
Five 8-hour shifts make 40 hours a week. With a 30-minute unpaid break each day, the paid total is 37 hours 30 minutes.
If you take a 30-minute unpaid break, 7 hours 30 minutes remain, which a timesheet in decimal hours shows as 7.5. The 30 minutes is an example, not a legal rule. Whether you get a break, and whether it is paid, depends on your employer and where you work.
How the hours are worked out
- Write both times in 24-hour form: 17:00 and 01:00.
- The end time is earlier on the clock than the start, so add 24 hours to it. 01:00 becomes 25:00.
- Subtract. 25:00 − 17:00 = 8:00, which is 8 hours.
- For minutes, 8 × 60 = 480. For decimal hours, 480 ÷ 60 = 8.
- With the break, 480 − 30 = 450 minutes, or 7 hours 30 minutes.
