About this shift

The shift starts in the morning and ends in the afternoon on the same date. It doesn't cross midnight, so the hours are a plain subtraction. From 6am to noon is 6 hours, and from noon to 4pm is 4 hours.

10 hours is 2 hours more than an 8-hour day. Four of these shifts come to 40 hours a week, and five come to 50 hours.

If you take a 30-minute unpaid break, 9 hours 30 minutes remain, which a timesheet in decimal hours shows as 9.5. The 30 minutes is an example, not a legal rule. Break and overtime rules depend on your contract and where you work. This page gives clock time only.

How the hours are worked out

  1. Write both times in 24-hour form: 06:00 and 16:00.
  2. Subtract. 16:00 − 06:00 = 10:00, which is 10 hours.
  3. For minutes, 10 × 60 = 600. For decimal hours, 600 ÷ 60 = 10.
  4. With the break, 600 − 30 = 570 minutes, or 9 hours 30 minutes.
