About this shift

The shift starts late in the evening and runs past midnight, so it ends in the afternoon on the next calendar day. 1 hour falls before midnight and 14 hours after it.

15 hours is 3 hours longer than a 12-hour shift. If you worked it as two separate shifts, enter each one on its own line in the hours calculator so each gets its own break.

If you take a 30-minute unpaid break, 14 hours 30 minutes remain, which a timesheet in decimal hours shows as 14.5. The 30 minutes is an example, not a legal rule. Break and overtime rules depend on your contract and where you work. This page gives clock time only.

How the hours are worked out

  1. Write both times in 24-hour form: 23:00 and 14:00.
  2. The end time is earlier on the clock than the start, so add 24 hours to it. 14:00 becomes 38:00.
  3. Subtract. 38:00 − 23:00 = 15:00, which is 15 hours.
  4. For minutes, 15 × 60 = 900. For decimal hours, 900 ÷ 60 = 15.
  5. With the break, 900 − 30 = 870 minutes, or 14 hours 30 minutes.
