About this shift
The shift starts in the morning and ends in the evening on the same date. It doesn't cross midnight, so the hours are a plain subtraction. From 8am to noon is 4 hours, and from noon to 6pm is 6 hours.
10 hours is 2 hours more than an 8-hour day. Four of these shifts come to 40 hours a week, and five come to 50 hours.
If you take a 30-minute unpaid break, 9 hours 30 minutes remain, which a timesheet in decimal hours shows as 9.5. The 30 minutes is an example, not a legal rule. Break and overtime rules depend on your contract and where you work. This page gives clock time only.
How the hours are worked out
- Write both times in 24-hour form: 08:00 and 18:00.
- Subtract. 18:00 − 08:00 = 10:00, which is 10 hours.
- For minutes, 10 × 60 = 600. For decimal hours, 600 ÷ 60 = 10.
- With the break, 600 − 30 = 570 minutes, or 9 hours 30 minutes.
