About this shift

The shift starts in the morning and ends late in the evening on the same date. It doesn't cross midnight, so the hours are a plain subtraction. From 9am to noon is 3 hours, and from noon to 9pm is 9 hours.

Three 12-hour shifts make 36 hours a week and four make 48 hours. With a 30-minute unpaid break on each, three come to 34 hours 30 minutes.

If you take a 30-minute unpaid break, 11 hours 30 minutes remain, which a timesheet in decimal hours shows as 11.5. The 30 minutes is an example, not a legal rule. Break and overtime rules depend on your contract and where you work. This page gives clock time only.

How the hours are worked out

  1. Write both times in 24-hour form: 09:00 and 21:00.
  2. Subtract. 21:00 − 09:00 = 12:00, which is 12 hours.
  3. For minutes, 12 × 60 = 720. For decimal hours, 720 ÷ 60 = 12.
  4. With the break, 720 − 30 = 690 minutes, or 11 hours 30 minutes.
